Mokshapat: Vedic Snakes and Ladders As Divination Tool
I am sure you must have played the game of Snakes and Ladder but do you know where it all started? The origins of the game (See FAQs)? What if I told you that this timeless game can also be used as a divination tool? Intrigued? Read on to know more about the Mokshapat or Mokshapattam.
Mokshapat, also spelled as Mokshapattam and also known as Vedic Snakes & Ladders is a board with 72 boxes. With each box giving out different states of being and planes of existence. As a divination tool, it offers deep insights into the soul’s journey and karmic threads. The ladders are virtues and wisdom, taking you higher towards ascension, while the snakes represent vices and lessons, taking you right back where you started from. It reminds us that life is all about the choices we make. The choices that take us up or down, that karma is real and stays with us in all the stages in life and beyond. The original board had more snakes than ladder – exactly as in life with more vices than virtues!

History of Mokshapat
A game, quite similar to the modern Snakes and Ladders was invented in ancient India. It’s not exactly known who invented it or when although it is believed to have been in use as early as the 2nd century BC. Many historians give the credit to Saint Gyandev – A 13th century Indian saint, Poet, philosopher and Yogi. Originally it was used for teaching morals to children and was reportedly called Gyan Chaupar. It was based on ancient wisdom and also served as a means for teaching fundamentals of Hinduism found in the Vedas.
In that era, it used to have 100 boxes like the present game of Snakes & Ladders. The present Mokshpatt survives with only 72 Squares but the inherent meaning remains the same. Somewhere along the line, it also got adopted as a divination tool, not too unlike the Tarot cards.
Towards the end of the 19th century, It was taken to UK where, with some modifications, it was adopted into a game. The game of Snakes & Ladders was introduced to the US in 1943 by Milton Bradley.
